While sentencing life imprisonment to the six accused from upper caste Thakurs in Uttar Pradesh involved in killing of eight Dalits thirty years ago, the Supreme Court (SC) December 5, 2009 said caste system should be abolished soon for ensuring rule of law and smooth functioning of democracy.
